Among the many divide-and-conquer tactics of the ‘authoritarian toolbox,’ one is consistently present, whether in Hungary or Turkey, Kenya or Kyrgyzstan, Russia or Uganda: vilification of and restrictions on independent non-profit organizations, including heightened scrutiny of their funding sources. STROIKA works with organizations, activist movements, journalists, and donors to anticipate and withstand attacks on their work, and to build their effectiveness and impact over the long term.
Preparedness and resilience have been a critical pillar of our work since our founding. Our deep experience in philanthropy supporting civil society in highly restrictive contexts has given us a nuanced understanding of how to best support activists and journalists facing the interconnected challenges of closing civic space. Thanks to decades of work in non-profit organizational development, board relations, management consulting, and intersectional social justice movements, our two-person team is able to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot all kinds of organizational and funding challenges.
Whether you're a small startup seeking advice during your earliest days of growth, a large international organization trying to change a culture of “but we’ve always done it this way,” or a donor trying to maximize your funding impact in a rapidly changing world, the STROIKA team is here to help.
We seek to amplify existing knowledge and wisdom within teams to find creative solutions to both new and long-standing challenges.
We bring together insights from across geographies, disciplines, and identities to achieve a more equitable and inclusive future for all.
Decades of experience in justice and labor organizing directly inform our values and methodologies. Our approach is participatory, empathetic, and pragmatically solutions-focused. We always seek to make the implicit explicit by drawing attention to unspoken power dynamics and uncovering decision-making biases that can cloud our collective good judgment.
